Cleaning and Inspecting Your RV Roof

In this video, Mark Polk from RV Education 101 goes over the importance and how to clean your camper’s roof appropriately and correctly. If this is your first time doing this, be sure to have someone with you that can guide you. A wet surface can be extremely slippery so you should take proper action and be very careful. Keep in mind, that it is very important to inspect and clean your camper’s roof once the camping season is over with.

First off, let’s inspect your camper’s roof before cleaning it. When you get on top of the roof, lay down and look at your camper’s roof closely for any dents, tears, scrapes and so on. You don’t want to throw a bunch of water and cleaning solutions on top of your roof if it will just seep through or if you’ll need to end up having to get it serviced. Be sure to check the seals around appliances attached to the roof, the edges, etc.. Again, you don’t want there to be any tears or damages before you clean it. If you do spot any damages to the top of your roof, don’t panic. Be sure to get these fixed before you store your camper away for the season. If you don’t know how to fix the damages yourself and would like professional help, we can help you out with that! You can schedule a service appointment through our website or by calling/texting us at (518)-563-1983!

As shown in the video, prior to cleaning the roof, it’s a good idea to hose down the sides, front and back of the camper. Next, go to the top of the camper (use caution). Keep in mind, before cleaning your camper be sure to check the ingredients. Stay clear from using products that contain harsh abrasives. At Momot Trailer Sales, we carry Dicor products like the ones you will see in the RV Education 101’s video. These are made specifically for RV and campers and will get the job done! You can check out what we have for cleaners on our online parts store or online parts catalog. You can pick up some in-store today at well at either our Parts & Service location at Tom Miller Road or our Unique Indoor Showroom on 60 Trade Road, both located in Plattsburgh, New York.

Make sure to rinse the roof first to loosen up the dirt and debris on the camper (you can use this kind of cleaner on motorcycles, cars, trucks, boats, etc. as well). You will then be ready to spray the roof cleaner directly on top of your camper’s roof. Start by cleaning the front of the camper and move your way backwards but be careful walking backwards and look out for things that may cause you to trip or fall. Safety comes first! You can scrub the roof with a bristle brush or sponge and in a circular motion. Take it section by section and rinse in between the sections being completed. You may need to repeat.

Protecting your roof is the next step of this process. Spray the RV roof protectant on top of the roof once it is dry and be sure to keep the RV out of direct sunlight. Wipe it down using a cloth or sponge. That’s all it takes!
